The least costly way to save energy is through conservation. Willmar Public Utilities offers a variety of Residential low cost/no cost energy saving tips and Business low cost/no cost energy saving tips to help you conserve energy. Be sure to stop by our office and pick up some of the energy saving brochures we have available.

Residential Saving Tips

Appliances and Lighting

  • When purchasing appliances, look for the ENERGY STAR® label*
  • Keep your refrigerator between 35 and 38 degrees Fahrenheit and freezer at 0 degrees Fahrenheit
  • Wash full loads; clothes washers and dishwashers are most efficient when operated with full loads
  • Wash clothes in cold water
  • Unplug rarely used appliances such as a TV located in the spare bedroom
  • Replace incandescent bulbs with compact fluorescent lights (CFLs)*
  • Use motion sensors, time clocks, or photo cells to control security lighting

Heating, Cooling, and Ventilation

  • Install programmable thermostat*
  • Limit heating to 68 degrees and cooling to 78 degrees
  • Reduce heating temperature at night and during unoccupied hours
  • Increase cooling temperature or shut off during unoccupied hours
  • Sign up for your utility’s load management program
  • Change or clean filter regularly
  • Seal leaky ducts with silicone caulk or foil tape
  • Keep fin-coils or registers free of dust and remove obstructions
  • Open shades during heating season and close during cooling season
  • Clean and tune air conditioner, furnace, and/or boiler

Seal Attic Bypasses

-Attic bypasses are pathways where indoor air moves into the attic.

  • Close fireplace damper tightly
  • Insulate, weatherstrip, and caulk the attic hatch
  • Install chimney collar and apply high temperature sealant
  • Apply foam sealant to pipe and wire penetrations
  • Block unsealed ceiling soffit, floor joist, and wall cavities with rigid insulation
  • Install air-tight recess light fixtures
  • Install gaskets behind switch and wall plates

Water

  • Reduce water temperature below 120 degrees
  • Repair leaky faucets
  • Install low-flow shower heads and faucet aerators
  • Install pipe insulation
  • Flush water heater
  • Clean and tune burner assembly on water heater

Weatherize Foundation

  • Caulk foundation cracks, penetrations, and sill plate
  • Insulate rim joist

Weatherize Windows and Doors

  • Install or repair weatherstripping and doorsweeps
  • Repair latches and locks; block window pulley holes
  • Seal air leaks and drafts around windows, doors, wiring holes, recessed lights, plumbing vents, attic hatch, etc.
  • Install plastic window kits

Business Saving Tips

Appliances and Lighting

Buy energy efficient office appliances and equipment. Refrigerators, dehumidifiers, copiers, computers, monitors, etc. are available in energy efficient models. Visit the ENERGY STAR® web site at www.energystar.gov for more information.*

  • Keep your refrigerator between 35 and 38 degrees Fahrenheit and freezer at 0 degrees Fahrenheit.

Commercial Food Service

  • Buy ENERGY STAR® rated or other energy efficient food service equipment*
  • Install Door Miser® anti-sweat control systems on refrigerated glass display cases*
  • Install VendingMiser® systems on vending machines*

Free Residential Fluorescent Lamp Recycling

Willmar Municipal’s residential customers can recycle their fluorescent lamps for free. Just bring your old lamps to Kandiyohi County Hazardous Waste along with a copy of your billing statement and recycle them for free. We pay the fee.

Rebates

Our rebate programs are another way you can help the environment and save energy and money at the same time. We offer great rebates on a variety of Residential Programs and Business Programs for energy saving appliances and equipment. CONSERVE energy for the environment and SAVE money for yourself.

Commercial and Industrial Off-Peak Heat Program

This service is available to any three phase commercial or industrial customer currently having service under another rate schedule. This rate is for off-peak service to energy storage loads that are remotely controlled by Willmar Municipal Utilities. Service is available 8 hours per day, 11:00pm-7:00am.
Benefits of this program:

  1. A discount of 20% will be applied to the energy charge/kWh
  2. The demand portion registered on the off-peak meter will be forgiven
  3. The rate is not subject to any energy acquisition adjustment
  4. There will be no additional customer charge for the second meter

WMU will furnish the meter, the current transformers (if required) and the off-peak equipment. In addition WMU, will cover the cost incurred for this equipment installation. The meter socket and all other associated equipment and installation will be the customer’s responsibility.

Commercial and Industrial Lighting Retrofit Rebate

Did you know that up to 30% of commercial  electricity cost is from lighting?
Replace your existing lighting with new high efficiency fixtures/LEDs and receive a rebate.  Rebates are based on a bulb per bulb conversion.
Screw in lamps such as compact fluorescent or 400 to 360 watt metal halide or similar conversions are not eligible for rebate.  The old fixtures, ballasts, and lamps must be retired.

Energy Star Appliance Rebate $50/Appliance

Purchase an Energy Star Rated Refrigerator, Clothes Washer or Dishwasher and receive $50 for each appliance.

Off-Peak Water Heater Credit $10/month

If you have an 80 gallon or larger water heater, sign up for our off-peak water heater program. Your water heater will only be energized from 11:00 PM until 7:00 AM. You will receive a $10 per month credit on your electric bill.
